About Us


As co-directors of Family Therapy Associates, Dr. Debbie Swayman and Karen Kaplan, MS.Ed.,  both licensed Marriage and Family therapists have been recognized as outstanding clinicians who are skilled and effective at helping their clients  find solutions to problems they cannot solve themselves.

 

Their focus is to recognize client’s personal strengths and resources in a confidential, caring, non-judgmental environment. Working with individuals, couples, and families, Debbie and Karen have extensive experience in dealing with communication and relationship issues.

 

As founders of DivorceMatters360, they are well respected throughout the community for their expertise on issues relating to divorce.  Kaplan and Swayman are also co-authors of the DCF/Court Approved Parenting Class “Pro-Active Parenting and Divorce”.

 

They are co-authors of on-line courses on family issues. In addition, their monthly column “Family Matters” is  read  throughout the community.

They are also the recipients of the “READERS CHOICE” award as the “Best Therapists in Broward County”.

 

Karen Kaplan, MS, MS Ed. LMFT
Therapist and Director of Psychological / Educational Programs

 

Karen Kaplan is known for her engaging style and her warm sense of humor, which clients say makes them feel at ease and comfortable.   She is experienced with the dynamics  involved in new relationships,  established couples, parenting challenges, co-parenting, "in-law" conflicts, infidelity, divorce, as well as issues that are often underlying the problem, including personal direction and career development.

 

While her focus is working with clients to find solutions and not place blame, her goal is to help clients find ways to shift from their problem-causing pattern to a more preferable, rewarding and peaceful interaction.

 

Karen is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She also teaches and co-authored the co-parenting class Pro-Active Parenting and Divorce. She holds a Master Degree of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University, a Bachelors Degree in Education from Boston University as well as a Masters in Education from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Debbie Swayman, DMFT, LMFT

Dr. Debbie Swayman is known for her gentle, yet direct approach, which clients report is effective and soothing. She is experienced with the dynamics of working with individuals, couples and families, including people facing divorce and blended family adjustments. Her areas of interest and expertise also include adolescent/teen challenges, families coping with children with special needs, chronic pain and illness, as well grief and loss issues. Her successful approach is caring and nonjudgmental, which clients say makes them feel safe to explore their problems.

 

Debbie is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and an approved AAMFT supervisor. She has also served as an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University and co-authored the co-parenting class Pro-Active Parenting and Divorce. Debbie holds a dual masters degree, as a well as doctorate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University.
